I just called into Hugh Hewitt who has spent most of the last three hours asking his listeners to explain the choice between George W Bush and John Kerry by way of analogy, e.g.:
Churchill v. ChamberlainMy contributions were:
Reagan v. Carter
offense v. defense
advance v. retreat
Allawi in power v. Saddam in power
I could also add:
A Humvee vs. a 1956 Peugeot Citroën
and
Alan Ladd in Shane vs Inspector Clouseau
The complete list of Hugh's listener suggestions is here.
The point of this exercise, in addition to being good old fashioned fun, is that it reveals the extent to which, as Hugh put it, Kerry has
branded himself, with help from Bush-Cheney '04 for sure, as weak and vacillating, a brand that cannot be sold in the post 9/11 America, with the echoes of that day that sounded in Bali, Madrid, Beslan, Taba and a hundred other places of terror and tragedy.Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at October 12, 2004 06:03 PM
I herdja man!
Mine was " Common sense vs. Intelligence" and I blogged about it as well.
Posted by: Frank Martin on October 12, 2004 06:30 PMHeard you as well. Now get a shorter URL! ;)
Posted by: Lileks on October 12, 2004 08:02 PMHow about Aussie voters vs. Spanish voters?
Posted by: Gary B on October 12, 2004 10:53 PMCaptain Kirk (tough, determined, not regarded as overly bright but clear-eyed about accomplishing his mission) vs. Captain Janeway (Babbling, self-contradictory, concerned only with getting her crew home alive, but willing to sacrifice a few in the name of political correctness, talks like Katherine Hepburn).
and
Dick Cheney vs. John Edwards =
Mr. Spock vs. Wesley Crusher
Posted by: Matt J Kurlander on October 13, 2004 12:05 PMOh, Matt, the Spock/Crusher might be the best possible example of how Star Trek fell! I've always portrayed it as Kirk vs. Picard (man of action vs. Eurocrat) yet yours is way better!
After all, Spock was an offical crew member while Wesley was just some kid who was always rerouting the antimatter flow without telling anyone, right before the Gorkulon battle cruiser delivered the ultimatum.
But let's see... Bush vs. Kerry...
Cheddar vs. Velveeta?
.44 Magnum vs. Super Soaker?
Groucho vs. Carrottop?
I thought of Kirk v. Picard, but whatever else Picard was, he was not a weasel, he was not indecisive, and he did not accuse fellow Starfleet officers of committing atrocities "in a manner reminiscent of Khan Singh" in order to advance his political career.
But, I'm guessing a Star Trek dissertation is the last thing Shark needs chewing his bandwidth.
Posted by: Matt J Kurlander on October 14, 2004 06:26 AMOK, you know I'm a Kerry supporter, but I can enjoy a little your fun way of expressing your Bush support. Chedder vs. Velveta is funny.
On the other hand, I cannot let slide "The Buck Stops Here vs. "It depends on what your definition of 'is' is." Not only is the "definition" part Clinton and not Kerry, but more importantly, the entire Bush administration, from Bush on down, has been resolutely opposed to taking responsibility for anything that has gone wrong in their administration, in the country, or in the world. Abu Grahib? A few bad apples. Greeted as liberators? WMDs? North Korea and Iran going nuclear? Bush couldn't even bring himself to specify one minor mistake he's made when asked in the second debate, and the dodge he gave was to blame himself for appointing the wrong people, which is really shifting the blame to his appointees.
In the Bush adminstration, the buck is not allowed in the Whitehouse.

There's no such thing as a "Peugeot Citroen", even though the two marques have been part of the same company since the 1980s. The car to which you linked is the Citroen 2CV - which I'll take over a Hummer any day.

Whereas in the Clinton/Gore administration, the buck was invited to come to the party, and to bring lots of friends.
OT, I know. But I can't resist the occasional OT.

The Skipper vs. Mr. Howell
And another
JDAMS vs. Spitballs
