GQ magazine sat down for "A Beer with John Kerry"
Kerry tells Hainey that he had a telephone relationship with Marlon Brando in 1985 and 1986, during the contras: "He took a huge interest in it. And he would call me. He was always asking questions. And he'd give me advice. I took his advice on a couple of angles. A couple of points."Kerry also told GQ that one of his favorite rock n' roll songs is the Stones' "Satisfaction".
Hmm. Brando, "Satisfaction" and the made-up Christmas visit to Cambodia with the magical hat. One wonders whether Kerry ever went to Vietnam at all, or if he simply watched Apocalypse Now too many times.
GQ would have obtained more reliable information by having a beer with a bear.

Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at August 18, 2004 01:36 PM"Satisfaction"? Oh god no. I have visions of Kerry driving in his car, one of the SUV's, trying to make THK. And he can't get no satisfaction.
Posted by: Ray Zacek on August 18, 2004 01:41 PMWe know Kerry was there, because dozens of witnesses, men of impeccable reputation, who served with him, have sworn affidavits that they saw him. The affidavits have been published in an obscure little book that just came out; I don't know if you've heard of it? If those brave veterans say he was there, then he was there.
Oh, wait, it turns out they weren't on Kerry's boat, so we can't rely on them. His boat, it seems, was populated entirely by fabulists like himself. Oh well...

Hey, give the repugs some time. They'll be floating that, too.
"When people think, they vote Democratic" - Bill Clinton
Kerry probably made up the phone conversations with Brando, too. Since Brando is conveniently dead now, there's no risk of his contradicting Kerry's story.
Posted by: J.A. on August 19, 2004 11:04 AMClinton's statement quoted above is as credible as anything else he's ever said. It depends on how you define "think." I also have doubts that "people" and the subsequent post-comma "they" are equivalent.

Ah, Ray, you support Clinton's point with that post, whether you realize it or not...
Posted by: Rabii LNMB on August 20, 2004 09:04 AMActually, I used to vote standard garden variety liberal without thinking about it at all. Republicans were by definition bad and no thought process was required. I used to go to a UU church, too, as a reaction against the Catholicism I was raised in, but realized at the heart of UU spirituality, there ain't no spirit, just as the core of contemporary liberalism has hollowed out. Clinton is articulate, energetic, even brilliant, but these qualities are divorced from ethics; Kerry is a pompous, sanctimonious blowhard who has aggrandized his brief Nam experience into a personal Iliad, followed by an antiwar Oddysey, but he's less Homeric than merely a creature of modern Juvenalia.
