Join the 43rd District Republicans at a BBQ this Thursday evening to meet Rob McKenna, King County Councilman and leading candidate for state Attorney General. I've met Rob a couple of times. He's a great guy, smart, savvy, fiscally responsible and I think he'll make a terrific A-G.
When: Thursday, Aug. 19th, 2004 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Where: Lower Woodland Park, Picnic area # 1.
Bring a friend and send this notice to the people on your e-mail list. The 43rd provides hot-dogs, condiments and drinks. Bring a small salad or cookies if you want.
DIRECTIONS.
I-5 North or South, Take 50th street exit (by the UW), and head West to Stone Way. (About 1.5 miles). Continue West on 50th past Stone Way (at the South East corner of the ball fields by Greenlake) and then take the first right turn into the park. If you go under Aurora, then you have gone too far.
Please RSVP, as late as 8 PM Wednesday, August 18. If you KNOW you are coming, send an email to Steve at steve@seattlerepublicans.org so we can get an estimate of the number attending. BUT, still come even if you don't RSVP
Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at August 18, 2004 12:05 AMShark, I'm curious what your thoughts are on Mark Vaska, the other candidate for AG.
Posted by: Timothy on August 18, 2004 10:13 AMVaska is liked in certain Seattle circles. He did some legal work on transit projects for Sound Transit. That is primarily how he made his reputation.
Beyond those circles, he doesn't have anything that would be more impressive than any other lawyer licensed in Washington. Many Seattle lawyers and judges have had statewide campaigns sink in the primary because they have relied too much on Seattle connections, money, and events. Vaska will be no different.

Posted by: Tim Ford on August 18, 2004 02:13 PMI've also met Mike Vaska.
He's a nice person, but I think McKenna is a stronger candidate. I find disingenuous Vaska's campaign pitch that he's "an experienced attorney, not a professional politician" and his rhetorical question about the A-G office "Why should it be a politician's job?" (see here)
It's a politician's job because it is elected by the people to enforce the state's laws (which are drafted by other politicians) and to provide legal counsel to the legislature, governor and state agencies (politicians, all). Any allocation of office resources, staff time, etc. is inherently a political decision. The AG is a politician, pure and simple. Any politician who tells you that they're not a politician is simply making a political argument to conceal the rest of their political agenda. That's not a good way to establish credibility.
Posted by: Stefan Sharkansky on August 18, 2004 09:48 PMVaska is running ads but not visiting anywhere outside of Seattle. A recent articel in the Tri-Cities hints that Vaska has not been west of the mountains.

It kinda reminds you of the book, "Where's Waldo?" Where's Vaska?? You can't have a credible campaign for a statewide office if you are holed up in Seattle. The ads he is running are more hit pieces than helpful. That's part of politics but it won't endear him to the Republican party if he chooses to run in another year.
Posted by: Tim Ford on August 20, 2004 12:21 PMAlthough I usually vote Democratic, I had to vote Republican because I wanted to vote for Rob. I think he's Hot! And he also seems like a responsible and enthusiastic man destined for politics. But mostly I think he's Hot in that nerdy way that always gets me going!
