The leftists who vote for this sort of nonsense, have a seemingly religious fervor for such excess (to be fair to both religious types and lefties who generally at most feign being religious, I would describe it more as a cult--so perhaps monocultists then). In my haunt of Portland, the cultists here build light rail even after explicitly being told by the electorate not to do so. I think part of it is that they are building memorials for their lefty agenda, but also I wish we had some decent investigative journalists who would track :) down where all the money goes. Every time the lefties in control here ask for permission, they always ask for more money (usually chock full of that supposedly "free" federal money). They constantly ask for more money (I live in Multnomah county and we now have an income tax!), because we are always supposedly on the brink of a fiscal disaster! Yet they always have money even after we say no for their egregiously expensive monuments--go figure.
