Seattle Democrat Logic

As I've recently noted, Washington state Democrats have proposed two misguided but seemingly contradictory bills in the legislature: HB 2700:

Permitting a college or university to maintain a diverse student population by considering race, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the admission and transfer process
and HB 2761
Serious attention must be given to creating learning environments that are intolerant of racism and exclusion
Remarkably, six Seattle-area Democrats are sponsors of both bills: Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez-Kenney (Seattle), Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos (Seattle), Rep. Joe McDermott (no relation, Seattle), Rep. Maralyn Chase (just outside of Seattle), Rep. John McCoy (slightly north of Seattle), Rep. Kathy Haigh (a few miles west of Seattle).

I think you really would have to be Seattle Democrat in order not to see the irony and humor in all of this.

I ran in to Rep. Hans Dunshee over the weekend. He says HB 2700 is "dead in Rules." Dunshee is obviously in favor of the bill but seems to understand how it might anger the electorate. Dunshee also suggested that the sponsors know the bills were DoA, but placed them in the hopper to please their left flank.

I live in Seattle. I have decided to do some small volunteer work in the Democrat party here. Where do I begin? Whom do I contact?

Thank-you

Jay
