Andrew Jackson was a major general in the War of 1812 and became a national hero when he defeated the British at New Orleans.

Davy Crockett gave his life trying to defend the Alamo.

John Lewis led the march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, risking his life to demand voting rights for the disenfranchised.

And then there's Nancy Pelosi:

Nancy Pelosi capped her first session as House minority leader in the predawn hours of last Saturday by battling Republican leaders to a standstill, forcing them to scramble for three hours before they secured enough votes to pass their historic Medicare bill.

Standing in the way of progress for three whole hours. God, what a woman.
