Is Bustamante Dropping Out?

Heard at this moment on the Hugh Hewitt show:

Rumors are circulating in Sacramento that Cruz Bustamante may be dropping out of the race. Dan Weintraub confirms that he has heard this, but is reluctant to post this on his blog because he has no independent confirmation of its validity and believes that it may have been planted by the Davis camp, which would prefer that Bustamante drop out. The strongest validation of the rumor is that Bustamante didn't make any campaign appearances today. This is on top of his recent stumble in the polls and trouble over campaign finances.

So there you have it. This is a rumor heard on national talk radio that may or may not be true.

What a grand rumor. It serves to make Gray Davis the worst villian of the worst melodrama of the season. As a 4th generation Californian, and a fellow alumnus of Mr. Bustamante, I'm shocked... shocked I say.

Heard it too... Also, a planted caller leaked the LAT poll numbers on Al Rantel with a twist, they said if Cruz dropped out, the Recall would be 50%-50%--but looking at the LAT numbers, that question doesn't seem to have been asked.

I doubt very much this would change the recall outcome, since at this point voters can pretty much assume Ahnuld as guv when Davis goes down. Now, it may discourage some Cruz supporters from showing up, which may have mixed results on yes/no vote on Gray. Would Tom then have a chance? With help of some newfound troublemaking demfriends?
