Celebrations

As Jews around the world this weekend celebrated the creation of humankind, Palestinians also celebrated. They celebrated Yasser Arafat's creation of a fabulously stupid uprising that has left thousands dead and injured; and that will postpone peaceful co-existence and Palestinian aspirations for years if not decades:

Palestinians marked the third anniversary of the outbreak of their uprising, or intifada, by taking to the streets today in support of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat...Witnesses reported that about 4,000 people marched in the West Bank city of Nablus, carrying pictures of Arafat, chanting slogans and beating drums

From the last paragraph of Christopher Hitchens obituary on Edward Said in today's Slate.com:

There is at present a coalition, named the Palestinian National Initiative, which never gets reported about. It is an alliance of secular and democratic forces among the Palestinians that rejects both clerical fundamentalism and the venality of the Palestinian "Authority." It was partly launched by Edward Said, and its main spokesman is Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, a distinguished physician and very brave individual, to whom Edward introduced me last year. In our final conversation a few weeks ago, Edward challenged me angrily about my failure to write enough on this neglected group, which certainly enjoys a good deal of popular support and which deserves a great deal more international attention. Perhaps then I can do a last service, and also dip a flag in salute to a fine man, if I invite you to direct your browsers toward the sites for Barghouthi and the PNI.

What's wrong with this picture:

"There is at present a coalition, named the Palestinian National Initiative, which never gets reported about."

"this neglected group, which certainly enjoys a good deal of popular support..."

One might think that with all the attention of the world's media on this particular itsy bitsy corner of the world, that a movement as earth-shattering as this, a movement that enjoys *so much popular support* just might be mentioned by the media from time to time....

Yawn.

Your smug dismissal of Palestinians calling for democracy in the Palestinian authority and an end to corruption, and willing to make peace with a Jewish state, is unwarranted, and reminds me of Arab fanatics who rail about how it doesn't matter who the Israeli Prime Minister is because all Israelis are the same. What makes you think "the world's media" whoever they may be, does a good job on reporting on what Palestinians really think?

The media never reports on the "Democracy in Palestine" movement either. Somehow I don't think they're the same people though.
