Last week I posted a jpg of the MEChA logo (eagle with dynamite and sword) that I found at the University of Michigan chapter's website. It's a crude image, maybe it's just a photo of some relic left over from the 1960s that somebody is fond of for sentimental reasons.
Then I found this MEChA logo over at the University of Washington chapter's website. It looks like a relatively new computer graphic logo, very skillfully done.

[click on the image for a full-size version and notice how sharp and clear the stick of dynamite is. I guess that dynamite is important to whomever created the image. I wonder why? ]
In the upper right hand corner of the web page is a photo of Fidel Castro with Che Guevara:

Anybody want to guess what kind of government the Mechistas aspire to install in "liberated Aztlan", or in, say, the State of California on the off-chance that one of them gets elected governor?
California gubernatorial candidate Cruz Bustamante said
The students who are in MEChA today are just like the students when I was there, pretty much they are trying to get an educationOn the page linking to MEChA's national and UW constitutions, there is a photograph of what appears to be a child soldier from the Mexican Revolution:

UPDATE It looks like The University of Washington gives MEChA office space in a university building! Would they do that for the KKK or the Aryan Nation? You would think they'd have the good sense not to, but now I'm not so sure.
Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at September 02, 2003 07:02 AMAnyone wonder anymore why the founding fathers gave law abiding citizens the right to own and bear arms. It may come to pass that the good citizens of California will have to take up arms in defense of our state against Mecha and other racist, seperatist orgainzations.
Posted by: Jim Brown on September 2, 2003 01:41 AMHoly shit!!
they've even got the Protocols on their website
Despite the efforts of conservatives, MECHA-gate is much ado about nothing. The question is, in his career as a politician, has Cruz Bustamante he done anything to advance the goals of MECHA? Supporting the same general immigration policies as President Bush does not count.
For crying out loud, Bustamante even speak Spanish!
Posted by: Markus Rose on September 2, 2003 12:53 PMI meant to say he doesn't speak Spanish.
Posted by: Markus rose on September 2, 2003 12:53 PMDid Bustamante go to the University of Michigan? University of Washington? You miserably fail. Again.
Posted by: Arash on September 2, 2003 06:53 PMSeems to me that Mr. Bustamante did attend Fresno State, or CSU Fresno, which has its own Mecha club. And he gives it lots of credit for getting him through school. His Spanish must have been so bad he didn't notice El Plan Espiritual:
Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada.
If he doesn't renounce that cheerful slogan, he'd better be prepared to defend it.
Further proof Bustamante is a radical and a dangerous racial seperatist: he has officially endorsed Joe Lieberman for President!
Posted by: Markus Rose on September 3, 2003 06:13 AMI am a part of the UW MEChA chapter. Next time I would advise that you do more thorough research before publishing your claims.
The documents and symbols (i.e. the eagle with the stick of dynamite) you refer to are considered by MEChA to be historical documents. This means that although we see them as an important part of our organization's history and formation, they do NOT literally represent a call to arms.
Instead, MEChA de UW works primarily on changing campus climate in order to provide a more welcoming environment for Latinos/as to succeed. In addition one of our main golas is to encourage more latino/a high school students to attend higher education. Recently we held a conference in which over 100 chicano/a high school students came to the University of Washington from around the state. In addition to attending cultural and political workshops, these students attended an admissions presentation, a campus tour, and a general information session on getting in to college.
Graduation rates and the rates of acceptance to higher education are extremely low for Latinos. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that many Latino high school students are living in poverty with parents or guardians who have never been to college. Unless they recieve strong support at school (unlikely within the failing public school systems we have today), many students have dificulty understanding or completing the admissions process, and are instead encouraged to work to support their families.
MEChA at UW works to reverse this trend and provide students with the support they need if they wish to attend college. This organization has been a neccesity and a lifesaver for many people, myself included.

These joints are the perfect Spanish/English rap mix. The ill rhymes and airtight production on this album are extremely inspired with originality and style. KEMO puts it down with a lyrical arsinal and some of the coldest beats around. Simply it's good music, "SIMPLE PLAN "is an absolutely must have album for the Summer of 2004.
