I saw the following bumpersticker on the car in front of me today:
If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will shoot their children accidentally. That is a true statement, but so is this one:
If vitamin pills are outlawed, only outlaws will poison their children accidentally.Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at July 20, 2003 05:44 PM
One of my favorite humorists, Damian Mason, came up with a great bumpersticker idea:
"Run Hilary Run!"
Place it on the front bumper!
Posted by: Mike Kole on July 20, 2003 08:25 PMReally, aren't there more accidental deaths due to guns than there are due to vitamins?
I work just two blocks from the kids in Jersey who had planned to "Columbine" the town -- to run through the streets shooting people at random. They didn't plan to put vitamins in the drinking water.

Nor does it appear they were planning an accidental gun death.
What's your point? Gotta do better than simply taking two, completely different situations containing the word "gun", drawing a line between them and calling that a point made.
Posted by: jimg on July 21, 2003 11:17 AMTo all lefties:
Automobiles kill 100 people every day... you want to outlaw them? Oh you do? Oh I forgot... lefty means collectivist imposition of the ideas of the elitists better able to think for all of us... so I better not ask complicated rhetorical questions that might confuse your fascist attempts to run my life. Here... let me make it simple for you...
You... live your life... and don't spend your free time, that you enjoy in this free society because of the bounty that is capitalism, to think of things in my life to regulate? OK? Its called the doctrine of FOAD.
Posted by: DANEgerus on July 21, 2003 11:46 AMFirst, I'm not a leftie. I'm as conservative as anyone.
Second, the point about cars is misguided. We do regulate cars. You need to pass a test, and you must be a certain age.
Third, comparisons with vitamins, cars or anything else is just wrong-headed. When kids see vitamins and cars, they know what they are used for. They also know what kitchen knives are for, and they generally don't use them to kill. Yes, they can be used to kill, but very few people have done that. We don't regulate these things because we don't need to. Here in Collingswood, a man who kept 10 guns in his home had no use for them but to kill. That's what his children realized. We don't hunt here, and crime is at a minimum.

Your arguments on this particular issue are as knee-jerk liberal as they come. That you may hold conservative views on unrelated issues is neither here nor there.
"Second, the point about cars is misguided. We do regulate cars. You need to pass a test, and you must be a certain age."
To drive them on public streets, yes. To own them and keep them on your own property, no. Plus, licenses to drive are fairly easy to get. Good luck getting a license to carry a gun in New Jersey, no matter how good your marksmanship skills may be.
"Third, comparisons with vitamins, cars or anything else is just wrong-headed."
Just because an analogy leads to a conclusion you don't like does not make the comparison "wrong-headed." In fact, the analogies are quite apt. Banning guns, cars or vitamins would be an extremely stupid idea, and for the same reason: all focus entirely on the social costs of the item, without regard for the corresponding benefits. Everyone understands this quite well for vitamins and cars, which is why no one seriously argues that we ought to ban them. Unfortunately, not everyone understands this about guns.

There is also a substantial archive of fascinating and invaluable 'New World Order Intelligence Update' articles on the liberty-threatening New World Order at http://www.survivalistskills.com/sect22.htm and archived also at http://www.rarehistorybooks.com/NWOLINKS.HTM. The 'NWOIU' site itself is currently down for substantial re-construction, but these archived articles are well worth reading.
