The EU today passed a resolution to give Iraq one last chance to disarm:
"The Iraqi regime alone will be responsible for the consequences if it continues to flout the will of the international community and does not take this last chance. What consequences will Saddam face if he declines to accept his "last chance" to disarm? Now that the EU has passed several prior resolutions that have escalated from "we're serious" to "we mean it" to "this time we really, really mean it", the next steps would be: one or two more really bad-ass resolutions followed by some onerous new cheese regulations. On Sunday, George Stephanopoulos questioned the French ambassador. To summarize the exchange: The French ambassador stressed that Iraq must destroy their Al Samoud 2 rockets. George then asked if Iraq did not destroy these missiles would they be in "material breach"? The ambassador replied that it would be up to the Security Council. George stated he knew this, but what was the French position? The ambassador did a shuffle and wouldn't answer the question. George repeated the question one last time. Again the ambassador avoided the question but hinted the answer was no.
The whole exchange summarized the French position. Lay down demands, confuse the issue and avoid consequences. We have now truly entered the theatre of the absurd.
